What is a UPS?

During failures, Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) devices keep systems and IT equipment safe and operational in various organizations as well the households. UPS provides enough battery backup power when the flow of electricity drops to an inadequate voltage, or if it stops.

Types of Uninterruptible Power Supplies

  • Offline/Standby Uninterruptible Power Supply – The offline/standby UPS is the most basic one. It provides light surge protection and battery backup.Once it senses that the main power source goes beyond acceptable limits or fails, it switches to the “offline/standby” battery where it will then go to the DC/AC inverter.
  • Online/Double Conversion Uninterruptible Power Supply – The online/double-conversion UPS differs from the offline/standby as the DC/AC inverter is always connected.There will be no transfer time between the main power source and battery, providing greater protection against spikes, electrical noise, and complete power failure.
  • Line-Interactive Uninterruptible Power Supply – The line-interactive UPS has a similar structure to the offline/standby, but with properties of an online/double-conversion too. The line-interactive design can handle small under-voltages and over-voltages by using a multi-tap variable-voltage autotransformer or a buck-boost converter.

 

Why UPS is used?

UPS is used to protect critical loads from utility-supplied power problems, fluctuations, and power outages, all using a dedicated battery.

There are 3 major functions that it essentially performs:

  • The main advantage of having a UPS in the organization or household is to avoid damage to hardware caused by overcurrents and voltage spikes. There are many UPS models that also continuously regulate the input power.
  • Another main function of a UPS is to avoid data loss and damage. In fact, without a UPS, data stored on devices subject to sudden shutdowns can be corrupted or forever lost. If software of power management software is also utilized, the UPS allows and facilitates the controlled shutdown of the system.
  • The UPS also ensures the availability of networks and other applications while avoiding downtime. When the UPS is used in conjunction with power generators, ensure that they have enough time duration to ignite in the event of any power failure.
